Is America On The Brink Of Failure?

There seems to be a growing sentiment throughout the world that America is headed down a path of certain failure.  How many times have you heard a foreign leader lean on the recent financial uncertainty and basically point the finger at the U.S.?  More then likely you’ve heard this more times then you’d like to remember.  Is America really on the brink of failure?

If you follow this blog on a consistent basis you’re very familiar with my addiction to the Wall Street Journal.  Recently they ran an article which depicted a well known Russian professors’ prediction that the U.S. will disintegrate in 2010. I for one believe that the idea of our country collapsing within the next 2 years is absurd. I do believe, one can make an argument that there’s many unsustainable paths we are headed down.  Some of which, without going into a 500 page novel, include dependency on foreign oil, dependency on credit, skyrocketing health care costs,  free falling home prices, etc.  If some of these issues aren’t addressed in the near future, our road to propriety and growth will continue to be put on hold.

Clearly we have a ton of work ahead of us a country, but at the end of the day what makes the U.S. great is everyone of us, the citizens.  We have been in tough times before and found a way to persevere; we will find our way again.
I’d like to know what you think; do you believe the U.S. is headed down a path of unstoppable failure?

I sincerely doubt that the US will be failing in 2010, or any time in the future. Yes we’re having some troubles in key industries, but this isn’t anything that won’t be corrected. When we near the end of our current recession I expect a full recovery and perhaps a shift in how we allocate resources into our industries.

I agree that we will survive this. Maybe it’s a good thing - a wake up call and a turning point to improvements that need to be made. Yes, these are scary times but if we learn from the mistakes that got us here it will only make us stronger.

I don’t believe that the U.S. is on the verge of collapse, but yes, we do need to change our ways. It’s sad, but it seems that we have trouble acting on these areas before they completely collapse and we are forced to find a new way of doing things (i.e. the current crisis). Maybe this whole recession will help us reevaluate a few other things and catch some of this before we get burned.
