Full Price, Kiss It Goodbye

Retailers might be creating a new breed of consumers and it’s not to their advantage.  With holiday sales slumping, it’s near impossible not noticing the endless sales and discounts that big box stores are serving up to customers.  Big margins might be a thing of the past even if things start getting better.

In the next couple of quarters you’re going to be seeing the earnings reports of major retailers look pretty dismal compared to years past.  It’s no secret people aren’t spending as much money this holiday season.  If you haven’t been to your local mall in the past couple of weeks, you should make a trip just to see the offers and steep discounts stores are offering.  Online e-tailers are lowing prices and offering coupons as well.  Take a peak at Amazon’s December Deals and you’ll see discounts galore!  These deep discounts could come back to haunt retailers.  Would you buy anything at full price right now?  How about 10% off?  Not me.  After talking with multiple people they all agreed, you can kiss full price goodbye.

Have prices finally began to fall back to affordable prices or is this just a temporary tactic to spike sales during our current recession?  Would you ever pay full price again or are you a new consumer on the hunt for bargains?

Once consumer confidence is restored we will see a jump in prices. And really its mostly luxury goods that have fallen in price; food is still more expensive now than it was before, and that’s what really hurts. Although it is nice to see gas under 2 bucks a gallon : )

I think this is just a tactic by retailers to pick up some more sales this holiday season, but I believe that it has backfired on them and when they attempt to raise prices back up in a few weeks no one is going to buy. Good article Justin!

I’ve always been on the hunt for bargains and never pay full price but I am enjoying having more bargains available now. I think we’ll be seeing this trend for some time - it’s cool to be cheap now, even thrift stores are busier than ever.
